Things That Really Grind My Gears #6: Yeshivish take on goyish food

I would like to take this chance to put my own “unique” (Torontonian Jewish) spin on that segment, to tell you guys what really “grinds my gears” in our community, or others.

I will try posting one or two grinds per week to keep this as an ongoing segment.

You know what really grinds my gears?!…

…Hearing about a particularly eccentric Ner Rebbe’s rant about how he feels sushi (even certified under the COR) shouldn’t be kosher and he doesn’t eat it. Why? Apparently, sushi is not a “Jewish food”. When asked if he eats pizza and fries, his answer is “yes, because generally speaking pizza and fries are eaten by a lot of Jews, which therefore makes it less of a “goyish food”. He apparently didn’t hold of pizza and fries when he was growing up.

I wonder what he would say if a lot of Yeshivish people started wearing jeans and Srugah’s ? G-d forbid polos?…will they then become the standard Monsey garb?!

More to come next week. Stay Tuned….

Please send me some suggestions (via reply to this thread) of things that Really Grind YOUR Gears, and I will post the winner in a few weeks!

The author of this segment never has anything nice to say. I encourage you to find the good in things, not just the extremely obvious bad things.

The name of the blog is FrumFromBathurst. Granted there are positive things to say about our frum community, there are also negative and sometimes very humorous negative things as well. Those should have equal coverage in this blog. I do have positive things in store (so stay tuned), but I don’t plan to remove the negative things and risk this blog becoming another “Mishpacha” magazine. That ain’t gonna happen on my watch.

  3. I agree with ‘frum from bathurst’. enough negativity. and anyone whoever thinks sushi is not an acclimation to goyishe culture is not thinking clearly (due to bias). I have had sushi in the past and didn’t find it to be spectacular. I think most people who start eating it do so only because of peer pressure ( even if now they enjoy it).
